LaLiga reaches 200 million followers on social media and consolidates its position as a global leader in digital strategy

LaLiga reaches 200 million followers on social media and consolidates its position as a global leader in digital strategy

LaLiga has among all football leagues in the world with the largest number of followers, and it has recorded a weekly average growth of 1.4 million followers this season.

LaLiga has achieved a new milestone in its digital strategy by surpassing 200 million followers across the 16 digital platforms it operates, with an average weekly growth of 1.4 million followers this season. This success positions LaLiga as the leader among major football leagues in terms of the number of followers.

With a digital community that has grown by 40.8 million fans throughout the season, LaLiga positions itself as the most popular football league on social media among the top five European leagues. In second place is the Premier League with 192.1 million followers (+33.1 million this past season). The Bundesliga takes the third position with 38.4 million followers and a growth of 5.8 million. The Ligue 1 increased by 9.8 million followers and now totals 31.5 million, placing it in the fourth position. The Serie A completes this ranking with 28.6 million followers and a growth of 5.9 million at the end of the season.

Currently, LaLiga maintains profiles on a total of 16 platforms, including 12 on Twitter, 3 on Line, 2 on Instagram, 2 on TikTok, and 2 on Facebook, where it communicates in a total of 20 languages: Spanish, English, French, Portuguese, Arabic, Chinese, Japanese, Hindi, Hinglish, Bengali, Turkish, Thai, Bahasa, Russian, Hebrew, Vietnamese, Lingala, Wolof, Swahili, and English Pidgin. Many of these profiles are dedicated to different markets of interest, such as China (Weibo, Toutiao, Wechat, and Bili Bili), Thailand, Japan, and Indonesia (Line). Additionally, it is particularly noteworthy that LaLiga attracts a younger audience, as profiles with the highest growth in recent years belong to platforms with a lower average age, such as TikTok.

"This milestone is a turning point for LaLiga, as we are the first football league to reach this number. It reflects the commitment we have made for years to strengthen the digital ecosystem, a dedication that has helped us make an impact and attract new audiences, accelerate growth, and generate business opportunities. Our focus on creative strategy and the creation of engaging content, tailored to digital trends, has been the key to this success. Additionally, adapting content to different formats, countries, and audiences plays a crucial role in reaching an increasingly wider public," states Alfredo Bermejo, Director of LaLiga's Digital Strategy.

In line with this strategy, LaLiga has launched the "Plan Impulso," a plan to support the digital growth of clubs, with excellent results. Club followers have skyrocketed, multiplying their growth rate by 9 since the beginning of the season. These figures demonstrate the demanding changes implemented by the clubs in their digital ecosystems and the exchange of best practices promoted within the framework of LaLiga Impulso.

Some of the most important milestones are:

- The digital strategy was implemented with the arrival of Javier Tebas as president in 2013.
- By the 14/15 season, LaLiga already had 6.3 million followers.
- In 2015, the Chinese social network Weibo became the first international platform opened by LaLiga.
- LaLiga was the first European football competition to broadcast its matches on Facebook, in a pioneering agreement over 3 seasons starting from the 18/19 season. The matches were broadcasted in India, Afghanistan, Bhutan, Maldives, Bangladesh, Sri Lanka, Pakistan, and Nepal.
- In 2019, LaLiga opened specific channels for eLaLigaSantander.
- In January 2020, LaLiga reached a significant milestone with 100 million followers on social media, a number that doubled over the next 3 years.
- LaLiga was the first league to open a profile on Twitch.
- It was also the first European league to launch a program on TikTok: Play LaLiga.
