Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, the popular kart racing game released in 2017 on the Nintendo Switch, is far from being neglected by Nintendo, as new tracks are regularly added through DLC. In addition to these paid expansions, it also happens that free updates modify or enrich the game's content.
A concrete example is the free update released on December 7, 2022, made available on the Nintendo Switch. This update brings a major improvement to the game by allowing players to create custom parties during VS races in certain online modes.
Revealed by the official Nintendo Europe account, we learn a bit more about this addition:

With the addition of Custom Mode in Mario Kart 8 Deluxe, you can now also choose which items each team can pick up in races and team battles. Download the free update now to discover this new feature!
Starting from December 7, 2022, the game offers a feature called Custom Mode. This new option allows Mario Kart fans to create their own parties by defining their own rules. You will have the ability to choose the items you want to appear during your races, as well as the ones you prefer to exclude.
It will now be possible to choose the items available during races in VS mode as well as during team battles. This is an opportunity to experience wild parties by allowing only the use of blue or red shells, or even play without any items if that interests you.
This can bring a real competitive aspect, and some parties use this mode to completely remove all items. Similar to Smash, items are considered frustrating as they can hinder a player's performance.
As a reminder, in the middle of 2022, rumors speculated about the possibility of Mario Kart coming to PC. However, since those dataminer announcements, no statement has been made by Nintendo.
