Inaugural BLAST R6 Major in Manchester alters format, boosts viewership
Manchester is gearing up to host the inaugural BLAST R6 Major of the 2024 season, as announced by Ubisoft. This marks the city's debut as an international esports event host. The B.E.C. Arena will welcome 20 of the world's top teams.
Notable adjustments have been made to the tournament format. Ubisoft revealed alterations to ranking points for the Six Invitational and regional leagues. The tournament will commence with Phase 1, featuring eight teams competing in a modified Best of 3 Double Elimination Bracket. The top four teams will advance to Phase 2, where they will join 16 teams in a Swiss format, selecting eight teams for the Playoffs.
Unlike previous iterations, the 2024 Major invites 12 teams directly to Phase 2, with eight lower-seeded rosters vying for the remaining spots in Phase 1. Phase 1 exclusively comprises Bo3 matches, enhancing the spectator experience. Simultaneous matches during this phase have become customary, catering to the preferences of superfans while boosting overall viewership.
Despite a reduced number of matches compared to the previous year, the event maintains its appeal to sponsors with a larger concurrent audience. Twitch remains the primary platform for viewership, with English and Portuguese leading the language preferences.
