F1 Esports revival through fan demand
Formula 1 (F1) captivated millions globally, and during the COVID-19 pandemic, sim racing surged as an alternative, drawing massive attention.
F1 Esports, rooted in the F1 game franchise, thrived in 2020, highlighted by the F1 Esports Virtual Grand Prix Series Vietnam, which drew 400,000 concurrent viewers. However, as the world returned to normalcy, F1 Esports faced a sharp decline. By 2023, the scene was in disarray, with major delays and a lack of communication from organizers like ESL, leading to fan frustration.
Community-driven platforms like Premier Sim Gaming Leagues (PSGL) kept the F1 Esports flame alive, but they couldn’t fully replace the official circuit. Despite these struggles, the 2024 F1 Sim Racing World Championship marked a cautious comeback, indicating potential for growth.
For F1 Esports to regain its footing, consistent event scheduling and improved communication are crucial. The audience remains, particularly during the F1 off-season, eager for content. The future of F1 Esports hinges on lessons learned from past mistakes, with a clear demand for the sport still present among fans.
