Minecraft Officially Arrives on PS5 with a Preview Version

After months of rumors and speculation, Mojang Studios has officially announced a native version of Minecraft for PlayStation 5 (PS5). This announcement is great news for PS5 players, who will soon be able to enjoy an optimized Minecraft experience for their console.

The news was confirmed by Mojang in June 2024, with the launch of a preview version of Minecraft for PS5. Players who already own the PS4 version of Minecraft on their PS5 can access and test this preliminary version by going into the "Settings" and selecting "Preview" in the game. This preview version includes the new Tricky Trials update, allowing players to explore challenge rooms, meet a breeze, craft a mace, and more, all while testing a version of Minecraft designed for their console.

The development of a native version of Minecraft for PS5 will allow the game to run more efficiently on the PS5 hardware. This will result in a smoother, more stable gaming experience. The native Minecraft version on PS5 will feature native 4K resolution, 60 frames per second, and higher settings for render distances and enhanced anti-aliasing. These graphical improvements will transform the visual experience of the game, making it more immersive than on older console generations.

Playing this native version also means players can enjoy cross-play with friends on all Bedrock devices and access the Minecraft Store, where they can spend their Minecraft tokens on worlds, expansions, skin packs, and more community-created content.

If you already own Minecraft for PS4, you can get the native PS5 version for free. Simply access the PlayStation Store on your PS5 and claim your digital copy. If you don’t own a version of Minecraft for PlayStation, you can buy a copy from the PlayStation Store or your nearest retailer. A physical edition of the game has also been available since October 22, 2024. This physical edition includes 3500 virtual currency tokens usable on the Minecraft marketplace.

Surprisingly, there is still no optimized version for Xbox Series X|S. After an update, the game runs in 4K and 60 frames per second with options for higher chunk render distances, but it is still technically the Xbox One version running in backward compatibility. Mojang may have prioritized PlayStation due to PS5 sales, which are twice as high as Xbox's.
