The Liberty City Mod: A Promising Project That Comes to a Sudden Halt!

The Liberty City Preservation mod was truly impressive. It allowed players to explore a modernized version of Liberty City directly within GTA V. And to top it off, you could seamlessly travel between Los Santos and Liberty City. It was a dream come true for fans of the series.

However, on January 16, 2025, the team announced the end of the project on their Discord, explaining that the "huge attention" they received and discussions with Rockstar Games led to this decision.

While the exact reasons remain unclear, it's assumed that Rockstar and Take-Two Interactive played a significant role. The modding team clarified that there was "no animosity" and that everything was done in an "amicable" manner.

Some of the speculated reasons include:

  • Intellectual Property: The mod used elements from GTA IV, which could pose copyright issues.

  • Competition Risk: Rockstar might be preparing an official remaster of GTA IV and doesn't want the mod to interfere.

  • Too Much Buzz: The viral success of the mod might have attracted unwanted attention.

This cancellation left a sour taste among fans and modders. Many are disappointed, feeling that this decision stifles creativity. Some also believe that, since the files are already circulating, it won’t change much.

This isn't the first time Rockstar and Take-Two have blocked mods. It raises questions about the future of modding in GTA. However, the team remains optimistic, announcing they plan to continue modding the GTA universe and are looking to return with new projects, perhaps more discreet ones.

Despite the setback, interest in Liberty City remains strong among fans. Some are hoping for an official remaster of GTA IV, which could explain Rockstar's reaction.

For now, players will have to settle for the official versions of GTA V and GTA Online, which continue to receive updates. The latest, the "Enhanced Edition" for PC, released on March 4, 2025, brings impressive graphical and technical improvements.

The closure of the Liberty City Preservation mod is a real blow to fans. But even though this project has ended, the love for GTA and Liberty City remains strong. The question now is whether Rockstar will respond with an official remaster or if new fan projects will emerge, albeit more discreetly.
