How to Change Your Controls on Rematch?

When playing Mario Strikers: Battle League Football, especially if you're coming from FIFA or PES, it’s natural to want your usual control setup. And with the Rematch controller offering customization options, one question keeps popping up: can you remap your controls directly in-game? Spoiler alert: not really.

The game comes with fixed controls:

  • A to shoot

  • B to pass

  • X to use an item

  • Y for lob passes or tackles

  • ZL to switch players

  • ZR to sprint

It feels intuitive for longtime Nintendo players, but it can be confusing if you're used to a different button layout from other football games.

Unfortunately, Mario Strikers doesn't let you remap buttons from within the game menus. You can only check the control layout based on your controller, but there’s no option to customize the buttons in-game.

Thankfully, there’s a workaround: using the Nintendo Switch system settings.
Head to:
System Settings → Controllers and Sensors → Change Button Mapping.
From there, you can completely reorganize your button layout — swap shoot and pass, or create a setup that feels more familiar to you. The good news? You can save up to five different profiles, tailored to your favorite games.

However, keep in mind a few limitations:

  • You can't switch profiles mid-match.

  • The remapping affects the entire console, not just Mario Strikers, so don’t forget to reset it for other games or menu navigation.

It's a bit of a shame, especially at a time when custom control schemes are standard, particularly in competitive games. This method works, but having to configure everything before launching a match can be a momentum killer.

In short:
If you want to change your Rematch controller layout (or any other), you’ll have to do it via the Switch’s settings. It’s doable, but not as convenient as in-game remapping. So make sure to set up your profiles ahead of time to avoid any unpleasant surprises mid-session.
