Ryu Nakayama, the director behind the Chainsaw Man anime, has surprised fans by revealing his latest project: a horror game developed on Roblox. Titled The Inn, the game promises a dark and immersive atmosphere—far removed from the colorful image most people associate with the platform. It's Nakayama’s first step away from the world of Japanese animation into video game development, and it's as bold as it is unexpected.
Famous for establishing a unique and unsettling visual style with Chainsaw Man, Nakayama is now looking to tell stories in a different way. He wants to break free from the limitations of traditional animation and is venturing into a completely new domain: a haunted Japanese inn where players must survive by escaping malevolent spirits. The Inn takes on a roguelite format, with procedurally generated environments, an oppressive soundtrack, and a deliberately dark art direction.
The first teaser shows a first-person exploration through dimly lit corridors, where every shadow could be a threat. The vibe clearly channels the classics of J-Horror—a genre Nakayama already masters through his work on Chainsaw Man and Jujutsu Kaisen. To deepen the immersion, the project also features top-tier Japanese voice talent, including Asami Seto (Jujutsu Kaisen), Akari Kito (Demon Slayer), Yoshino Aoyama (Bocchi the Rock), and Megumi Han (Hunter x Hunter).
The announcement has split the fanbase. Some are disappointed that Nakayama isn’t working on a new anime series, while others applaud his ambition to break the mold and create freely outside the constraints of major studios. The debate is on: is Roblox too casual a platform, or is it a fresh creative frontier for visionary artists like him?
