The Mario movie sequel announced: to the stars! Release date and film theme

After the worldwide success of the first Super Mario Bros. Movie in 2023, Nintendo and Illumination Studios have confirmed the highly anticipated sequel: Super Mario Galaxy Movie. Scheduled for April 2026, this second feature film will send Mario and his friends on an interstellar journey directly inspired by the beloved games Super Mario Galaxy and Super Mario Galaxy 2.

The first movie left a strong impression with its colorful universe and faithful adaptation of the franchise, winning over both families and longtime fans. For this sequel, Nintendo and Illumination are setting the story in space, the perfect playground for a narrative full of exploration and emotion. Mario, Luigi, Peach, and Bowser will travel across new planets and galaxies, guided by the mysterious Rosalina and joined by the adorable Lumas iconic figures from the galactic saga.

The cast remains star-studded, with Chris Pratt as Mario, Charlie Day as Luigi, Anya Taylor-Joy as Peach, and Jack Black once again bringing his charisma to Bowser. Seth Rogen, Keegan-Michael Key, and Fred Armisen also reprise their roles, while Aaron Horvath and Michael Jelenic return to direct with Matthew Fogel writing the script. The score will once again be composed by Brian Tyler, who crafted the soundtrack for the first film, ensuring an epic and immersive musical atmosphere.

The release is shaping up to be a true event: the movie will premiere in France on April 1, 2026, ahead of the U.S. on April 3 and Japan on April 24. The announcement was made during a special Nintendo Direct celebrating the 40th anniversary of Super Mario Bros, highlighting the symbolic importance of this project for Nintendo.

With this second installment, Nintendo is doubling down on its ambition to turn Mario into a cinematic icon. The first movie grossed over $1.3 billion at the box office, and this sequel aims to go even further with a more ambitious spectacle, new planets to explore, and an even grander production.

Meanwhile, Nintendo continues to expand its presence on the big screen with other projects, including a live-action The Legend of Zelda movie slated for 2027 proving that the era of Nintendo film adaptations is only just beginning.
