Pokémon Legends: Z-A: How to Find and Obtain the Metal Coat

The easiest and fastest way to get a Metal Coat is to buy it directly in the city of Bâti-Racine. This massive construction site is located southeast of Lumiose City, just after Wild Zone 2. To get there, follow the main road leading south from the center of Lumiose, cross the Wild Zone, and continue until you reach the metallic structures of the site. Once there, you’ll see two merchants standing side by side.

The merchant on the left sells various evolution items, including the coveted Metal Coat. It costs several thousand Pokédollars, but it’s a worthwhile investment if you want to evolve Onix into Steelix or Scyther into Scizor quickly.

Once purchased, the item is automatically added to your bag and can be used immediately. However, you must have progressed far enough in the main story to unlock this vendor, so don’t rush there too early. Once accessible, you can buy multiple copies, which is useful if you plan to evolve several Steel-type Pokémon without relying on luck.

If you’d rather save your money, there’s also a free method. Complete Side Mission 114, titled A Skarmory Feather. This quest is located northeast of Wild Zone 17. After accepting it, the game will guide you through several steps involving a wounded Skarmory. Once the mission is complete, you’ll receive a free Metal Coat as a reward.

It’s a perfect way to get the item without spending any Pokédollars, while enjoying a bit of exploration. Since some side quests are repeatable or linked to other NPCs later in the adventure, it’s also possible to collect multiple Metal Coats through this system.

Once you have a Metal Coat, using it is simple. In Pokémon Legends: Z-A, you no longer need to trade with another player as in older games. Just open your bag, select the Metal Coat, and use it on the Pokémon you want to evolve:

  • Onix → Steelix

  • Scyther → Scizor

In addition to these two evolutions, the Metal Coat belongs to a family of rare evolution items worth collecting. If you’re looking for other items like the Fire Stone, Water Stone, Moon Stone, or Thunder Stone, head to the Stone Emporium, located south of Lumiose City. This shop is a real treasure trove for evolution items and rare materials, perfect for strengthening your team without relying on random drops.
