To start, you’ll need to progress through the main story. Fossil restoration becomes available only after completing Main Mission 10: The Secrets of Mega Evolution. Once you’ve finished this quest and reached Rank F, a new side mission will appear on your map near the Pokémon Research Laboratory, located south of Lumiose City, close to Wild Zone 1. That’s where your fossil adventure begins.
Accept the quest titled “Revived from a Fossil.” Go upstairs in the laboratory, where you’ll meet a new researcher standing beside a large circular device, the Fossil Restoration Machine. He’ll explain how it works and give you 20,000 Pokédollars to buy your very first fossil.
Next, head to the Stone Emporium on Vernale Avenue, north of the lab. This shop specializes in rare stones and fossils. There, you’ll find three different fossils for sale:
Jaw Fossil → Revives Tyrunt
Fin Fossil → Revives Amaura
Old Amber → Unlocks Aerodactyl later in the game
Each fossil costs 20,000 Pokédollars, so make sure you have enough money if you plan to collect them all. Once you’ve made your purchase, return to the Research Laboratory and speak to the scientist again. He’ll place your fossil in the restoration machine, and after a short cutscene, your Fossil Pokémon will come back to life.
Here’s the full list of available Fossil Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A and their evolution or Mega Evolution conditions:
Tyrunt → Tyrantrum: Evolves at Level 39, but only during the day.
Amaura → Aurorus: Evolves at Level 39, but only at night.
Aerodactyl → Mega Aerodactyl: Can Mega Evolve when holding an Aerodactylite, obtainable later in the game.
Each of these Pokémon has a unique typing and design. Tyrantrum is a powerful Rock/Dragon type with devastating physical attacks. Aurorus, a Rock/Ice type, counters Dragon-types with strong Ice moves, while Aerodactyl remains one of the fastest Rock/Flying Pokémon in the franchise, perfect for offensive teams.
For Shiny hunters, there’s some good news: Fossil Pokémon can be shiny. However, the Shiny Charm does not affect fossil Pokémon, and the base shiny rate is about 1 in 4,060. To maximize your odds, save your game before restoring a fossil. If the Pokémon isn’t shiny after revival, reload your save and try again, this is the fastest way to “reset” fossil Pokémon.
With a bit of patience and Pokédollars, you can easily add Tyrantrum, Aurorus, and Mega Aerodactyl to your collection. Restoring fossils is not only a nostalgic nod to the series’ origins but also a great way to strengthen your team with rare and powerful Pokémon in Pokémon Legends: Z-A.
