In Mario Tennis Fever, color skins do not change character statistics, but they represent an important part of overall progression. Unlocking them is almost entirely tied to two elements: the total number of Classic Matches played and performance in Special Games challenges. The system encourages players to explore different modes rather than simply stacking wins in a single playlist.
For Luma, the process is straightforward. The character only has one alternate variation, and it unlocks quickly. The blue skin is obtained after playing 15 Classic Matches, regardless of the result. It is usually one of the first color skins players unlock naturally while progressing through the game.
Shy Guy has the largest number of color variations to unlock. The first skins are tied directly to match milestones: blue after 35 matches, green after 65 matches, light blue after 85 matches, and orange after 100 Classic Matches. Two additional colors require participation in Ring Shot Special Games. The pink skin unlocks after playing a single-player Ring Shot challenge once, while the yellow version requires participating in the same mode in doubles.
Koopa follows a more traditional progression system. The blue skin unlocks after 45 Classic Matches, red after 70 matches, and yellow after 90 matches. These variations tend to appear later in progression, especially for players focusing mainly on solo modes.
Yoshi uses a mixed system combining match progression and performance challenges. The blue, light blue, and orange skins unlock after 25, 60, and 80 Classic Matches respectively. The remaining variants require stronger performance: achieving an S Rank in specific Special Games score challenges, including two-player Ring Shot, four-player Ring Shot, Piranha Plant challenges, and Auto-Tennis, unlocks the pink, purple, red, and yellow skins.
Finally, Paratroopa follows a structure similar to Koopa. The blue, green, and yellow skins unlock after playing 55, 75, and 95 Classic Matches. This makes Paratroopa one of the longer characters to fully complete if the goal is to obtain every color variation.
In practice, the most efficient method is to first accumulate a large number of matches to unlock most color variants automatically, then focus on achieving S Rank in Special Games challenges to finish the rarer skins.
